2026 Car Insurance Minimums: Northeast Source Guide
Quick Answer. An insurance minimum is a legal coverage requirement, not a settlement estimate or a promise that all losses will be paid. Verify the policy type, effective dates and additional required benefits before using a three-number shorthand.
How to Read Liability Limits
A shorthand such as 25/50/25 usually means $25,000 in bodily-injury liability per person, $50,000 for bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 for property damage per accident. It does not describe collision coverage for your own car, every medical benefit or uninsured-motorist protection.
If several people are injured, the per-accident limit matters as well as the per-person limit. Ask for the declarations and relevant endorsements instead of trying to calculate available payment from an insurance card.
State Requirements to Verify for a 2026 Policy
- Massachusetts: 25/50/30 liability minimums apply to policies written or renewing on or after July 1, 2025. The change also affects compulsory uninsured-motorist limits; PIP remains separate. Massachusetts: 2025 Mandatory Coverage Bulletin
- Connecticut: the insurance department lists 25/50/25 liability limits, with a single-limit alternative. Other required coverage must also be checked. Connecticut Insurance Department: Auto Insurance
- Rhode Island: use DBR’s consumer materials to verify the current required limits and applicable policy form before purchase or renewal; this guide directs you to the regulator for current limits rather than quoting a numeric minimum. Rhode Island DBR: Consumer Insurance Resources
- Vermont: the regulator lists 25/50/10 liability limits. Vermont DFR: Auto Insurance
- New Hampshire: RSA 264:20 specifies 25/50/25 for proof of financial responsibility when required. This is not a statement that every driver must buy a policy. New Hampshire: RSA 264:20
- Maine: the regulator lists 50/100/25 liability limits and additional required coverages. Maine Bureau of Insurance: Required Coverage
- New York: ordinary nonfatal bodily-injury/property liability shorthand is 25/50/10; death limits and no-fault/UM requirements need separate attention. New York DFS: Auto Insurance Resource Center
- New Jersey: Standard-policy minimum bodily-injury limits rise to 35/70 for policies subject to the January 1, 2026 change; property damage is 25. Basic and special policy arrangements should not be represented as identical. New Jersey DOBI: 2026 Liability Limits Bulletin New Jersey DOBI: Standard and Basic Policies
Why the Policy Date Matters
A crash claim concerns the policy in force at the time of loss. A later increase in minimum requirements does not automatically rewrite an earlier policy or establish coverage for a past collision. Provide the declarations showing the relevant term and any midterm endorsements.
For a newly quoted policy, ask the insurer to confirm compliance and explain optional limits. A comparison should include deductibles, exclusions and optional benefits, not price alone.
What to Ask Before Relying on “Minimum Coverage”
Ask what pays for injury to someone else, injury to you, damage to another vehicle and repairs to your own vehicle. Also ask about a borrowed car, paid rideshare work, household drivers and travel outside the state.
After a crash, identify actual available insurance before evaluating an offer. A policy limit can constrain a particular insurer’s payment without establishing the total legal value of the loss or excluding other possible coverage.
