Indiana Car Insurance Claim And Complaint Guide
IDOI recommends contacting the company before filing a complaint. Assemble the relevant documents, explain the unresolved insurance issue, and keep BMV proof-of-insurance correspondence separate from the claim.

Define The Company Decision Or Missing Answer
Start with the insurer’s exact name, policy period, claim number, and representative. Identify the issue you want addressed: a coverage explanation, disputed amount, missing response, or another handling concern. A description of how the crash happened may provide background, but the complaint should make clear what the company did or failed to explain.
The Indiana Department of Insurance complaint instructions ask consumers to contact the insurer, agent, or broker first. Keep a copy of that request and any answer. If the exchange occurred by telephone, make a dated note of the question, the representative, and the response without embellishing it.
Organize Supporting Copies
IDOI asks for supporting documentation and warns against sending original documents or evidence. Build a packet with the relevant declarations, company correspondence, denial or estimate if applicable, and a short attachment index. Keep the originals in your own secure file.
For a disputed figure, show how it was calculated and where the supporting amount appears. Distinguish an estimate from an invoice and an invoice from a payment. If you are unsure whether a charge belongs in the issue being reviewed, identify the uncertainty rather than adding it to a total as though it were agreed.
Use plain, factual wording. State the explanation or action you are seeking and connect it to the document. Avoid alleging a legal violation merely because an outcome is disappointing; describe the conduct so the department can assess the matter within its role.
Select The Official Complaint Channel
The IDOI Consumer Services page offers help with insurance questions, including automobile matters. The complaint instructions identify an online portal as the preferred filing route and also describe a printed-form option. Use the current official links and confirm which process you are using.
An informal question and a formal complaint are different records. Save the final complaint narrative, attachments, and submission confirmation. If someone helps prepare the packet, review every fact yourself and agree who will monitor follow-up requests. Do not assume an adviser has submitted a form simply because a draft has been prepared.
Understand The Problem Report Number
IDOI’s acknowledgment identifies a Problem Report number and the consultant handling the file. Use that reference in later correspondence. Keep it separate from the insurer claim number and any police report identifier; each points to a different organization’s record.
The department explains that it sends the complaint to the company and obtains a written response. It also says the complaint becomes a public record. Keep the submission relevant and ask how necessary sensitive material should be handled. Do not place unrelated personal records into the packet simply because they were stored in the same accident folder.
Compare The Response With The Original Question
| Review Item | What To Check |
|---|---|
| Issue addressed | Does the response answer the question you actually raised? |
| Policy explanation | Does it identify the provision and policy period being discussed? |
| Amount explained | Can you connect the calculation to the estimates or other records? |
| Next step | Is another document or clarification requested, and who receives it? |
If a point remains unclear, write a focused follow-up using the existing Problem Report number. Identify the unanswered issue and the attachment relevant to it. Repeating the entire complaint without saying what is missing can make the record harder to follow.
Keep BMV Verification Separate
The Indiana BMV proof-of-financial-responsibility instructions describe a separate process when BMV requests insurance verification. The insurer must electronically submit a Certificate of Compliance for the incident date and vehicle. Information given to the police is not the same as completing that BMV task.
If your concern involves a requested COC, preserve the BMV letter and your communications with the insurer. Ask whether the correct filing was sent and processed. A claims adjuster’s acknowledgment of an accident should not be treated as confirmation of an administrative insurance filing unless that has actually been established.
Ask About Jurisdiction And Legal Issues
IDOI’s complaint page explains that policies issued in other states generally require contacting the appropriate regulator there. Identify any interstate policy circumstances early. The crash location alone may not tell you which department should address the contract question.
Keep legal timing, settlement terms, and any contested rights on a separate advice list. This guide does not calculate an individual deadline or promise a result from a complaint. Its practical aim is to make each issue traceable: the question, the document, the responsible recipient, and the evidence of the next completed step.
